Item DescriptionNavigate all major U.S. coastline and inland waterway areas with this Garmin U.S. Waterways and Lights CD-ROM. To use this CD-ROM, simply load the disc into your PC’s CD-ROM, then transfer maps from the PC to your compatible global positioning system unit. The trip and waypoint management functions of this product work with nearly all Garmin GPS units, except the GPS100 family and panel-mount aviation units. The map-download feature of this product is recommended for use with the GPS III Plus, NavTalk, GPS 12MAP, and GPSMAP 162/168. Use a blank 8 MB or 16 MB data cartridge to upload map data to the StreetPilot GPS, StreetPilot ColorMap, GPSMAP 295, and eMap models. Nautical navigation aids displayed include coastline detail with thousands of small islands, plus wrecks, obstructions, and other hazards (no depth contours). Also displayed are lights, buoys, sound signals, and day beacons; U.S. inland shoreline detail for lakes, reservoirs, waterways and rivers; and icons indicating boat ramps, dams, facilities, and danger areas. This disc includes a detailed U.S. map with cities, towns, highways, major local roads, and interstates. This product also offers GPS 48 support, which allows you to transfer nautical navigational aids from a worldwide database. When you install the GPS 48 support, there will be a selection to upload a particular lights region, which include North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific. The detail in this product is not bad. The point of the product is for offshore navaids. It is of limited detail for inland regions. Other MapSource software are better for that. The trip and waypoint management functions are great. It is fun to transfer your tracks to the PC to see where you have been. If you are considering buying this, be sure to check out Garmin’s online MapSource Map Viewer on the cartography page of their website. It shows the detail in the product. It can help you determine if the software is right for you. I would recommend their GPSMAP 76 unit without hesitation. It is great GPS unit!
After using Garmin’s US Roads and Recreation software, I expected more from this one than I got. Quite a bit of the information is already available in Roads and Rec., and U. S. waterways doesn’t have that much more. It misses many boat launch sites in CT, doesn’t show many other features as described in the earlier review, and doesn’t show major marine features such as natural and artificial reefs. I think Garmin coud have done a much better job with the space on the CD.
If you have an eTrex product (I have a Vista) the MapSouce tool adds a very nice PC based route and waypoint creation and editing, upload/download, tool. Perhaps the coolest MapSource feature is the ability to capture the track data from your GPS for review, saving, and even printing the actual track maps for your log book.
The shoreline, park, roadway maps, and waterway points of interest are much better than the default data in the Garmin GPS when purchased and make this software and data worth having.
Don’t however, expect this database to replace an actual chart, a real chart is essential for any navigation because this data DOES NOT include ferry routes, cable crossings, marinas, depth soundings, or even all of the boat launch ramps.
A particular site to check is Garmin.com for a bulletin they have with a data upgrade for some east coast data that is was in error.
