arrived on time and as ordered. The one time Updatiing of the software and maps did not go smoothly, and it took three tries before I was able to update the GPS. Otherwise it seems to work fine and be a reasonable value. I found it difficult when shopping to get the information regarding the different properties of each of the offered GPS and am still not sure that I ended up with the best for my needs, but it seems, so far, to fit the bill..
Great asset for traveling! Love the destination time feature!
It took me some searching to discover various features of this system. The wide screen provides a great visual field. Traffic alerts/delays are a wonderful addition. Superb product for a great price!
I bought this to replace an older Tom Tom. I thought I’d give Garmin a try and the free traffic for life sold me on this unit.
Unfortunately, this bit of the description is very misleading: “No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information.”
The option for traffic doesn’t even show up unless the device is plugged into a power supply. It didn’t come with a wall power supply and when I plug it into my computer via the USB port it goes into PC mode, so the only way for me to see the traffic icon at all is to plug it into my car. Okay, so much for the “just open the box and turn it on” bit. SO I plugged it into my car, found the traffic icon…and oh look, there’s a big long code I am supposed to type into some website to get my traffic updates. So much for the “no subscriptions” part, eh?
Even if it’s a free signup, I still have to hassle with it, and that’s not what I wanted at all – of course I had nothing handy to write down this code and the URL I’m supposed to type it into, and I keep forgetting to bring something out to my car to take care of this, which is irritating. I wanted to “…Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information” but alas, I am denied. So I’ve had this puppy for a week and no traffic updates so far.
Other than that issue, which is very frustrating but fairly minor overall (assuming it does work when I finally get it set up), I mostly like the unit thus far. Route calculations are quicker on this than on my old TomTom and so far I haven’t had any problems with accuracy. The screen is clear and easy to read. I like that it powers on and off with my vehicle when plugged in; something my TomTom did not do, I had to turn it on and off separately.
I do wish the documentation that came with the unit was better…the user guide is a joke and the website doesn’t seem to have a lot of useful information either. Is there really no volume control on this thing?? Just mute or full-blast irritating? I REALLY miss the volume control on my TomTom. I keep this unit muted; when typing in an address it can’t beep as fast as I type and so I get randomly timed beeps and it throws me off. I wish I could mute the beeps but keep the voice directions on, but there doesn’t seem to be that sort of control at all. Disappointing!!
Overall, a three I think. Mostly useful, but has some things about it that are very irritating! Next time I have to buy a GPS I will probably go back to TomTom.
Meets ALL expectations! Great deal buying “Refurbished”. Needed to call tech support to get the free map update because the serial number showed it as previously activated. Very easy to do.
I bought it to use to find my way quickly to up to 50 Yard Sales every weekend I get from [...] website. Before the Garmin I wasted tons of time trying to find the addresses. Now I enter in the addresses before I leave home and it guides me quickly and directly from one to the other with no wasted time. It’s paid for itself with the bargains I’ve found to resell online!
It’s fun to play with all the various features and download new cars and voices. I’m traveling to Eastern Europe this Autumn and will get maps for the area I’m going to so I won’t get lost in a Country I don’t know with a language I don’t speak!
Very pleased with the purchase and the BIG money I saved buying it on Amazon. BTW: If you buy it online by auction the warranty is not honored but buying it on Amazon carries the full Garmin Manufacturers Warranty and benefits.
I’m having a hard time deciding whether or not this is a 4 or 5 star item. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and rated it 5.
As for why I decided on this GPS unit, I had heard that Text to Speech was a very useful feature (this would be akin to “in 200 feet turn right at Rose St” rather than “in 200 feet turn right”), so that put me in the new models, and I wanted to make sure I had a wide screen version as when you do need to look at the screen, it helps provide a context for the area. The real battle for me came down to the 255w vs the 265wt, and I would say both are very useful GPS units. I’d probably recommend the 255 over the 265 unless traffic is a really important feature to you, but if the 255 is sold out as this often happens, then the 265 is also definately viable. I got this GPS for my dad for christmas, and I’m happy to say that this unit has worked great since christmas. It worked so well, in fact, that a visiting friend decided to get the same model as the one currently in use. I’ve used this unit quite a bit and I can tell you that it really delivers on the navigation. This unit shines in a lot of ways: Satelite aquisition is fairly quick (quickest aquisition has been a few seconds. Typical is about 5 minutes or less), directions are great, and the Text To Speech feature works nearly flawlessly (it misprounces some street names). It’s quite easy to drive without looking at the GPS help. Additionally, there are a lot of neat features that come with the GPS as well, including an spedometer, odometer, travel time vs stopped time, various points of interest (including restaurants, gas, hotels, etc, etc) and the distance to those, and way more. Probably the nicest extra is the traffic meter, but that’s never quite worked right for me, and as I understand it, it really only works for certain areas as well (so, your millage may vary here).
